About Us

CHEER APPLIED was created to address shortfalls and gaps in research methodologies, mainly:

Inefficiency in the translation of clinical research into practice: The key problem addressed by practice-based research is the inability or slow implementation of insights from clinical trials into day-to-day patient care. Randomized clinical trials for new therapies measure efficacy but not effectiveness. The misalignment between effectiveness and efficacy can result in a lack of relevance between the published literature and what practitioners find useful to implement in the care of patients. Practice-based research networks address this through involving day-to-day practitioners in research and thereby bringing clinical research closer to practice.

Lack of ongoing engagement of community practitioners in research: One of the most significant barriers to the successful implementation and development of the practice based research network is the active and ongoing engagement of community practitioners. Even though many clinicians demonstrate an initial enthusiasm to be involved in research efforts, they often lack the practice-based resources and knowledge to be effective participators. This may result in study delays, regulatory mishaps, cost overruns, and frustrations regarding the ease of integration of clinical research into clinical practice and is an important lesson from many practice based research networks.

Effectively addressing these shortcomings requires:

  • Increased public understanding, confidence, and participation in patient-oriented research. This includes community-based practitioners, their patients, and representatives of third-party payer organizations and leaders of healthcare organizations;
  • An adequately trained and diverse workforce maintained in an environment that nurtures their ongoing career development;
  • An enhanced biomedical informatics base for clinical investigation, including data standards and central databases;
  • Adequate and ongoing funding to support the infrastructure and administration of a clinical research enterprise that has a focus on effectiveness of treatments

CHEER APPLIED benefits a variety of audiences including:

  • Through its network, CHEER APPLIED will examine how treatments and procedures can improve the quality of patient care, resulting in improved outcomes

  • Benefit by examining health outcomes to determine the optimum quality of care
  • Data can also be leveraged to examine coding variations between sites and other quality indicators
